We want to inform you, our users, about recent changes to how you can access digital materials through Hoopla, our most popular digital platform for eBooks, audiobooks, movies, and more.
Why the Changes?
Hoopla operates on a pay-per-use model. This means the library pays a set fee every time someone checks out a title — unlike other services where we buy or cooperate to buy a limited number of copies. While this allows us to offer thousands of titles instantly (and simultaneously!), it also means costs rise with every checkout.
Unfortunately, our budget was unexpectedly reduced by nearly 24% this year, and these cuts only recently went into effect. At current usage rates, our Hoopla funds will run out by September, well before the end of the year.
What We’re Doing to Stretch Access
In order to keep Hoopla available for as long as possible in 2025, we have taken the following steps:
- Reduced the monthly borrow limit per user.
- As of now, we are limiting access to materials that cost less than $2.99 per circulation.
- Many high-demand audiobooks and new releases are priced at $3.99 to $4.99, so these will no longer be available temporarily.
- Lower-cost items such as movies, music, comics, and many ebooks and audiobooks remain available.
Without these changes, we may have to pause Hoopla access altogether later this year or consider canceling the service entirely — a decision we want to avoid.
What You Can Do
- Explore our other digital services like [Libby/OverDrive, Boundless, etc.], which operate on different licensing models.
- Reach out to us with questions, suggestions, or feedback. Your voice helps shape future service decisions.
We understand this is disappointing news. Hoopla is one of our most beloved services, and we share your frustration. Thank you for your understanding and for being part of our library family.
