Kids in grades 2-4 are invited to participate in a new program at the library which matches kids with trained teen volunteers. Beginning in mid-November, teens and students will meet once a week for 30 minutes to practice reading together. Once a month they will work together to solve exciting clues from their reading to open a Breakout Box! A Breakout Box is locked with several locks that can be opened by
solving clues. This collaboration will reinforce what they’ve read and the idea that reading can be fun, help them to develop a bond over shared reading, and serve as a reward for their hard work!
Reading Buddies will run mid-November through May. Students that participate will get to keep the books they read to add to their home library and celebrate with a pizza party. Parents will be asked to fill out two brief surveys to gauge improvement in their child’s reading level.
An orientation session will be held Monday, November 14 at 6:30 pm. At this session, students will learn more about the program and meet their Teen Reading Buddies. Registration is required. Registration at https://forms.gle/47WWYBCd4fpgePzx5.
This program has been funded by a Youth Literacy Grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.
