Breaking Racial Barriers - African Americans in the Harmon Foundation Collection
In the 1920s, the Harmon Foundation was established to recognize African American achievements. In 1944, the Foundation organized an exhibition called “Portraits of Outstanding Americans of Negro Origins”. In 1967, 41 of the original 50 portraits were given to the National Portrait Gallery.
