Need to shake up your summer routine? Come join us at the Cumberland County Library for family-friendly Zumba classes, FREE OF CHARGE. Classes will be every other Tuesday morning from 10:30am-11:30am in our outdoor garden area, from July 19 to August 30. Our instructor, Terri Rhoads from Inspira Fitness Connection, will lead us through a fun and invigorating cardio routine that will be sure to get your toes tapping. Please note, children must be supervised by a parent or guardian during this class. Kids who participate in this program must be ages 5 and up. Spots are limited, so be sure to sign up today! Are you ready for the new school year? Cumberland County Library and its community partners want to help your family get off on the right foot this year with our upcoming Back to School Health and Resource Fair, happening on Tuesday, August 30 at the Alms Center. All attendees to the event will get a free backpack loaded with a variety of useful school supplies! Also, to make sure everyone’s school year starts on a healthy note, Southern Jersey Family Medical Centers will be providing COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters, and Project BEST will be on hand giving free eye screenings. Plus, a wide variety of community agencies will be providing free literature and handouts to let everyone know about the great family resources available throughout the community. That’s not all! To keep the evening moving on a lively note, Masters of Magic & Fun will provide free airbrush tattoos and their disc jockey will provide great music to keep everyone moving. Also, we’ve got your dinner covered with grab & go meal bags available at the kitchen window! The Back to School Health and Resource Fair will be held at the Alms Center located at 1 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way, Bridgeton, NJ 08302 on Tuesday, August 30, 2022 from 5-8pm. PLEASE NOTE: Although registration is not required to attend this event, there are a limited number of appointment spots for the free eye screenings from Project BEST. On Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 2 PM, Cumberland County Library Library will host a free historical program, “Langston Hughes: I Too, have a Song to Sing,” a dramatic live performance featuring American Historical Theatre actor and scholar Keith Henley as famed Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes. On Wednesday, September 21, at 6:30 pm, Cumberland County Library will host a free concert by well-known Philadelphia-area musical group Magdaliz and Her Latin Ensemble Crisol. “Crisol” is Spanish for “melting pot;” the group is dedicated to the interpretation of a variety of folk and traditional music genres from all over Latin America and the Caribbean. They released their first album, “Songs from the New World,” in 2002. In 2009 Magdaliz and Her Latin Ensemble Crisol (as A Latin Trio) performed at the Kimmel Center as first place winners in the “Philadelphia Best Latin Music Ensemble” category. “Yoga With Ceci” is a soft and gentle practice with breath work and flow, appropriate for beginner and intermediate practitioners. One-hour sessions begin with centering, warm up and end with a 5-10 minute relaxation (Savasana) Sanskrit vocabulary is used intermittently with English. The type of yoga practiced in this program is called Hatha. It is a gentle practice which utilizes props (including chairs, blocks and pillows)and our motto is “No new pain in yoga”. Each participant is encouraged to bring their own mat, although there will be some mats to borrow. This program is part of a grant-funded partnership between Cumberland County Library and the New Jersey Department of Health. Please note: registration is required to participate in “Yoga With Ceci”. Yoga has many benefits for children including enhancing their flexibility, strength, and coordination. It helps develop a sense of calm and present moment awareness while nurturing self-esteem and focus. Families are encouraged to bring their own mats, although there will be some available to borrow. September is National Recovery Month. Help the Cumberland County Department of Human Services and the Cumberland County Library celebrate this important health movement by participating in the upcoming Recovery Skate-A-Thon! The Recovery Skate-A-Thon will be held at Skate 2000, located at 1748 S Burlington Rd, Bridgeton, NJ 08302, on Wednesday, September 28 from 6pm to 8pm. The first 150 people to attend the event will receive free admission and free skate rental! Please note - the event is first come, first served. No reservations are available, and admission is not guaranteed after attendance reaches 150 people. This family-friendly event will also feature free refreshments, a guest speaker, and information pamphlets on recovery and general wellness.
